The Church of the Sacred Heart Kilglass was erected in 1897 when Fr. John Maher was Parish Priest. The present building replaced a T-shaped church which had stood on the same site for over 100 years previously. Prior to the erection of the first church on the present site earlier Kilglass churches had stood in the townland of Mullaghmacormack and in Kilglass Cemetery The church which was located at the cemetery was titled St. Mary's Kilglass.
The present church stands on elevated grounds and overlooks Kilglass lakes. Kilglass Church originally gave the place name to the parish. "Cill Ghlais" meaning "Green Church"
A latin derivation of the word Kilglass is Kilverden ('verden' the Latin for green.) This is the name of a local cemetery, though now in the parish of Strokestown, that was used by many parishioners from the Kilglass area as a place of burial until the late 1800's.
Thanks to the generosity of parishioners and the hard work of the Kilglass restoration committee, the beautiful renovations were completeted on Sacred Heart Church Kilglass in December 2014.
The €20,000 loan kindly given to us by the Elphin building fund was paid back in July 2016.
This accomplishment is also largely due to the generous donations of so many people.
